Chemical properties of Diethyl
Sulphate
i. Colourless
oily liquid with etheral colour. Darkens with age.
ii. Soluble in
organic solvents like alcohol and ether
iii. Sparingly
soluble in water wherein it decomposes slowly to Alcohol and Ethyl
hydrogen sulphate
iv. Distillable
: Can be distilled without decomposition at sub-atmospheric
pressure
decomposition slowly only on heating. Decomposes at temperature
approaching
its normal boiling point of 208 deg. C. Heating to 220 deg C causes
decomposition to CO2, Ethylene, SO2, Water and Carbon.
